Enriched by Him
Psalm 40: 1-11, I Corinthians 1:1-9
This Psalm passage is attributed to David as a thanksgiving
of deliverance by God. It begins with David after he waits patiently, being
delivered from the pit of despair to a solid rock. His cry of pain becomes a
song of praise. To trust in God like David does is to wait on God patiently. In
this salvation from the pit God has multiplied God’s wonderous deeds and
thoughts toward him. They are too many to count. He speaks of God’s
faithfulness and steadfast love claiming it to keep him safe forever. Surely David’s
life has been enriched by God’s multiple blessings including salvation from the
pit.
In I Corinthians 1 Paul gives thanks to the Corinthians
because of the grace of salvation which has been given to them in Christ Jesus.
He tells how they have been enriched in him in speech and knowledge of every
kind including strengthening their testimony. This is so they are not lacking
in any gift. Like David has told of in Psalm 40, God has multiplied blessings –
too many to count. Paul like David is confident of God’s faithfulness. This
faithfulness will empower the Corinthians for holy living so they will stand blameless
during the final judgement. This enrichment of God’s power will carry them
through the hard times leading up to it.
The enrichment of trust in God’s faithfulness to deliver is
said by David to make one happy versus those who turn and trust the proud and
go astray after false gods. Though we don’t worship physical man-made idols
today we worship things other than God – our lifestyle, our possession, our
country/and or its leaders.
How is our trust in God when we feel like we’ve been in the
pit of life too long losing our patience? Do we turn to other earthly things to
pull us through instead of remembering God’s multiple blessings and realizing
God’s multiple thoughts of us. The greatest thought being that of bringing
salvation to us.
May we be enriched in this hope – this trust of God
empowering us through whatever may come our way. Even when we are in the pit of
despair God can pull us out and place our feet upon the secure rock of God’s
salvation. Amen.
