Seeking God’s Strength

 Psalm 105:1-11, Romans 8:26-39

Psalms 105 is a call to worship worshipping God for the Lord’s mighty acts. It recounts Israel’s history from Abraham to the settlement in Canaan. The Psalmist shows great trust that the covenant God made to Abraham will come true. Though times can get rough the Psalmist says to seek the Lord and God’s strength and also to seek his presence continually.

Romans 8 talks about the new covenant of love. God has done the ultimate of giving up God’s son to die on the cross in our place to bring salvation. This is shown as the ultimate gift of love. As Paul puts it, “If God is for us who can be against us.”

Another gift God has given us is the Holy Spirit who helps us in our weakness. When we don’t know how to pray the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Also interceding for us is Jesus who knows first hand how it is to be human. The famous verse 28 tells about how despite present suffering, believers trust that God will bring good from even the worst of circumstances.

While the Psalmist tells of trust in God fulfilling covenant promises, Paul in Romans talks about the greatness of God’s love and how victorious we can be through the strength God gives us through the Holy Spirit. He tells how nothing good or bad can separate us from the love of God. He lists angels, rulers, things happening now or to come, nor height nor depth, not anything in all creation can separate us from the love of God.

I’m assuming that the Psalmist who sought God’s presence continually basked in God’s love. We have this great statement of God’s love in Romans that nothing can separate us from it and that which gives us strength with the Holy Spirit to help us in our weakness. Let us continually remind ourselves of God’s love for us and seek the strength God provides through the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Isaiah 2:1-5, Romans 13:11-14 Isaiah prophesied in chapter 2 about people going up to the mountain of the Lord where God would teach them God’s ways and that they can walk in the Lord’s paths. Buist 2025 Christmas Newsletter

2025 will be remembered in the Buist household as the great remodel. We are remodeling both bathrooms, our kitchen, floors, and walls. We are literally camping out in our house having to go out to eat or barbeque in our outside kitchen where the microwave lies. Next year we’ll hopefully have photos of our newly redone house. This is my last year before I have to retire from my church’s appointed ministry due to my age. I will work until November 1, 2026 and will return as a volunteer. Power of Faith

 Luke 17:5-6, II Timothy 1:1-14 The apostles in our Luke account ask the Lord to increase their faith. They see faith as something measurable that the more you have the more you can do. Jesus turns this concept of increasing faith around by saying if you have a mustard seed of faith you can move mountains. Jesus is talking about the strength, the intensity of one’s faith versus its size. They have what the writer of II Timothy says in today’s passage, “the cowardice of spirit.” We can’t be too hard on them however since this was well ahead of Pentecost when they finally received the power of the Holy Spirit. I love this Timothy passage since it commends Timothy’s mother and grandmother for bringing him up in the faith. It even mentions them by name, which is something unheard of in ancient patriarchal literature. Note his father and grandfather are not mentioned.
